“After nearly 40 years of being successfully active in motorsport on the highest level, Audi now becomes the first German automobile manufacturer to compete in Formula E in order to test and advance the development of new technologies for production,” said Peter Mertens, Member of the Board of Management, Technical Development, AUDI AG.
He added that the FE04 follows in the illustrious path of breakthrough technologies such as the quattro, TFSI, TDI, hybrid drive and other innovations and is a symbol of the brand’s commitment to sustainability through electric mobility.
“Our first single-seater race car is a portent of our product offensive in the field of electric mobility that we are ringing in with the Audi e-tron in 2018,” said Mertens.
At the recent IAA car show, Audi signaled its move towards e-mobility by announcing that it will offer more than 20 electrified models before 2025.
In the FE04, the centerpiece is the combination of the motor and transmission that creates greater efficiency. The one-gear transmission was created in collaboration with technology partner Schaeffler.
In the upcoming season, champion Lucas di Grassi of Brazil will be in the driving seat of car number “1”, while his teammate Daniel Abt of Germany will be behind the wheel of car “66” as they race to defend Audi’s title.
The season opener will take place in Hong Kong on 2 Dec 2017.
