Golden Phoenix or Mao Shan Wang? We hunt down the best durians on a recent Audi Driveaway Adventure to Tangkak Durian Hub and ask participants for their reviews.

For many durian connoisseurs, the chance to sample an exclusive durian buffet at a durian plantation is hard to resist. Couple that with the freedom to explore Malaysia’s roads in a well-organised convoy, and you have one of the most popular road trips in the myAudiworld calendar—the Audi Driveaway Adventure to Tangkak in Johor.

The trip’s highlight? Sampling unique varieties of durian, such as the Golden Phoenix, the Red Prawn and a special type found only at the Tangkak Durian Hub called the “Tiramisu”.

 

Golden Phoenix

The Golden Phoenix (also known as Jin Feng) is one of the smallest varieties of durian.

Also known as Jin Feng, this variety is one of the smallest to be found and sometimes is as small as the palm of your hand. The flesh is smooth and pale yellow while the seeds are tiny.

Ong We-le (right), Audi S3 owner and on his second Audi Driving Adventure, shares his sentiments.

"I liked the Golden Phoenix. It can be hard to find in Singapore sometimes. The ones we tried were very small, and the flesh was sweet yet a little bitter."

Red Prawn

The Red Prawn - smooth, creamy, and bitter sweet.

Often has light orange-coloured flesh and is also known as Ang Heh. The flesh is smooth and creamy while the taste is bitter sweet. A popular choice among curious participants.

Chella Poon, Audi A6 owner, shares her thoughts about the Red Prawn.

"To me, the Red Prawn smells almost of the sea, fresh and clean. It’s a bit bitter and more fibrous."

Mao Shan Wang

Mao Shan Wang, or Musang King, is the first choice of many.

The big daddy known as the Musang King, this is to many the top breed of durians. The flesh is thick, tender and creamy, and it has a strong, bitter-sweet taste. Quite beautifully shaped, with a star-shape pattern at the bottom. 

When asked about the Musang King, Dave Ler (extreme right), Audi Q3 owner and on his second Audi Driving Adventure, says this.

"I’m a super durian fan. The Mao Shan Wang was quite good. My wife also bought a few nice ones for her mum."

Tiramisu

The Tiramisu is a new breed of durian grown only at Tangkak Durian Hub.

Dubbed for its coffee-like fragrance and taste, this new breed is only grown at Tangkak Durian Hub. The farmers use humic and fulvic acids and a special enzyme. Flesh is fibrous, sometimes a little watery, but the taste is quite bitter and sweet.

"I love durians a lot. We tried four to five different varieties here. The flesh is very fibrous and it is supposed to taste like coffee. Not bad!"
