Audi Ambassador and pro golfer Quincy Quek shares his top tips for acing the prestigious tournament at the Sentosa Golf Club on 13 October.

This year’s edition of the Audi quattro Cup, the world’s largest tournament series for amateur golfers, takes place on The Serapong championship course at Sentosa Golf Club. Play it smart, and it could land you the title of National Champion as well as the spot to represent Singapore at the Audi quattro Cup World Final in Mexico this December.

But conquering Serapong is never straightforward. It demands that you hit either the left or right side of the fairway, as this will give you a better angle for your next shot. Here are three key holes that illustrate my point.

Hole #4
Distance 535 metres | No. Par 05 | Index 03

"Teams attempting to reach this green in two have to hit their drives toward the left fairway."

This hole is a classic risk and reward: A par-5 wrapped around a lake with a huge bunker splitting the fairway in half. Teams attempting to reach this green in two have to hit their drives toward the left fairway. However, that’s just half the job done—they still need to hit their second shot at least 230 metres over water and onto the green. Once you do that, a birdie is almost certain. But if you don’t and end up in the water, then a double bogey is very much on the cards. While going for the green in two can be tempting, I can assure you that taking the safe route—meaning playing to the right fairway and treating it as a three-shot hole—will most definitely work to your advantage as well.

Hole #14
Distance 184 metres | No. Par 03 | Index 10

"While you do want to try for that hole-in-one prize, keep in mind where your bailout area is."

A hole that will increase your heart rate ever so slightly. Especially when there’s a chance you could walk away with the all-new Audi A5 Sportback, Q2 or Q5 if you can somehow, by a stroke of luck, get the ball from point teebox to a hole-in-one shot. Water left, water right, bunkers everywhere — this hole is every golfer’s dream. While you do want to try for that hole-in-one prize, keep in mind where your bailout area is. The green is very wide, and the pin will probably be tucked all the way at the back left corner. A few metres short and you’re in the bunker; a few paces left, you’re in the water—making it a near impossible shot to make. However, aiming for the middle of the green, also known as the “fat side”, will most certainly secure your par. So I’ll leave you to weigh this one out.

Hole #18
Distance 496 metres | No. Par 05 | Index 08

"A key to playing this hole well is to get the yardage right."

A hole that suits the draw shot. You can choose to hug the left side of the fairway, which will give you a shorter second shot and a chance to get home in two, or hit it down the centre and play the hole in regulation for a stress-free par. The bunkering on this hole is what makes it so challenging. There are bunkers to catch every one of your shots. A key to playing this hole well is to get the yardage right. Make sure you work out the distance to the widest part of the fairway for each of your shots, so that you stay clear of those bunkers and carve out the smoothest path to the green for you and your partner.

One last but very important point: The greens on Serapong are going to be very fast, so remember to take a bit more break and “die” your putts in. See you at Audi quattro Cup!
